The consultation

During your initial quote consultation, we'll take the time to listen to your ideas and any specific requirements you may have for your project. We really enjoy this part of the process as it helps us match our work to your aims. We have the experience to guide you to the best choice for the way you use your space. We'll also discuss with you the types of finish that are available.

The sanding process

To begin, some basic remedial work is usually needed for newly uncovered or previously unsanded floorboards. This is because over time all floorboards distort by cupping or bowing, leaving the floor uneven, undesirable to look at, and uncomfortable to walk on. If desired, we can also source and patch any broken or missing boards. This is done sympathetically and according to your and personal taste.

The floor is now ready for sanding. If your floor has not been previously sanded, we'll use the powerful Pallmann Cobra belt sander to level the boards and remove any previous finishes such as varnish or gloss that may have been applied to the floor in its past life. Our experience means that we can do this whilst still maintaining the integrity and unique character of the original floor.

Next, we use the Pallmann Spider with its innovative three-disc technology. This gives a fine finish, sanding up to 1" from the wall, resulting in a cohesive overall finish to the floor, avoiding a picture-framing effect where there are changes in scratch patterns from the use of different machines. The final edges and corners are finished with detail sanders.

Throughout the process, we use specialist dust-extraction equipment. Apart from the obvious benefit of cleanliness, the equipment is categorised "H Class", the highest grade of extraction, meaning that it removes even microscopic particles of dust from the air that otherwise would be damaging to your health.

Finally, the chosen finish is applied.

A recent project – before & after

We recently worked with a client whose floorboards had been glossed several times around a rug, and then carpeted over and forgotten about for many years. We carefully worked to strip back this old finish, then smoothed and re-finished the boards with hard wax oil. The result is a complete transformation!
